( Not actual car seen today, google pic.)

Saw a Suzuki SX4 sedan today. I’ve seen plenty of SX4 hatchbacks and shopped for them several times but some how never realized that there was a sedan version. What make this really cool is that the SX4 sedan is probably the only notchback crossover ever made. Wonder if the Subaru Baja counts?

What’s a notchback, what makes this a crossover?

Its only a crossover because they call it one. Its actually a compact sedan but since its supposed to be a crossover wasn’t sure if it would be a sedan or a notchback. Words are hard, I don't know what I'm doing :P

yeah, kinda of a “ Crosstrek sedan” type thing. Those were decent looking little rigs.

Sedan only came a fwd,

And the sx4 was clearly made as a crossover/wagon. The sedan looks ugly to me.

i believe the sedan was made basically for the American market.

America still  hated wagons back then, and the sedan gave them a cheap starting price

Fun fact: they also made a hot hatch version by removing the AWD, lift kit, roof rack, and body cladding from the regular SX4 and adding sport suspension.

The hatch was better in every way possible.

Former AWD 6 speed awd SX4 owner, so I might slightly be biased

Even more fun fact: a guy in Barbados put an Alfa V6 in the middle of one of these and took it racing.

There was also an Outback sedan for a few years. My wife actually likes them which is funny because she hates outbacks for some reason

And the Indian market. They also made a sedan of the Swift for India called the Swift DZire, and it's an abomination.

Suzuki made a big mistake not offering a sunroof on the SX4 or the Aerio that came before it

Hrm. I’d say the sedan is not a crossover. The hatchy thing has a slight lift and little wheel arch thingies, it’s trying. It looks like this is trying to be nothing more than a little sedan.

Oh so a notchback is opposed to a hatchback. I must say you Americans and your aversion to hatchbacks is endlessly fascinating. I feel likt it’s because big cars have always sold better, so the American people rally against anything that could be considered small. And that hatchbacks are often small. But the fact that a Tesla S has a hatch is completely irrelevant - it’s just a bigger boot opening.

There are some markets where saloons carry more prestige than hatchbacks and estates such as Asia and South America (but not exclusively).

I think its because hatchbacks are viewed as practical. C rossovers are viewed as “practical” and “versatile” i.e. dumb people think that a higher vehicle means more snow and dirt road safety, but the average sedan buyer isn’t looking for practicality as a priority. While the crossover buyer is planning on regularly hauling more than two people and their stuff , the sedan buyer is probably looking to haul one to two people while occasionally hauling more people for short distances  as necessary.

Americans had a brief love affair with hatchbacks in the 1970s and ‘80s, when they were seen as new and modern. But, they quickly developed a stereotype as being indicative of cheap economy cars and fell out of fashion for that reason. I think GM’s horrendous X-cars, which were marketed heavily as hatchbacks, played a role.

Also the Volvo S60 Cross Country. If I were still into midsize sedans I’d keep my eye out for one.

Ugh. It’s all so weird.

Why does it have to be so badly based on fashion? Rather than actual practicality and merit?

Australia had a similar love affair with big cars. But fuel prices rose and Toyota etc started importing good smaller cars, and they got better and cheaper. We didn’t have domestic manufacturers trying to shovel shit cars down our throats, we learned to buy smaller cars.

A hatchback is just a bigger opening for the trunk.

So Americans will put a car down because it’s practical? I heard DeMuro sound shocked when he found the new Aston (I think it was the Aston) was a hatchback. As if it matters.

Is practicality on a sleek sports car actually worse?

The last generation of Outback sedan looks really goofy.

It’s basically a Legacy with a lift kit.

I really like the sedan. I think an AWD sedan would have helped Suzuki sell a lot more cars.
